A Night with the Middle School Kids

Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. It seems like only yesterday that I was one of them. I don’t want to go there again. Those were not my best days. I was skinny, braces on my teeth, and very shy. Can you believe it? Yep, I’m proof people do change.

Anyhow, back to last Friday. The Friends of the Library sponsered a dance for the Middle School kids. And Will, always looking to do a good deed, volunteered us. OK. No big deal. Josie and I worked at the concession, and It actually turned out to be fun. The kids were polite, called us “Ma’am,” and said, “Thank you.”

However, am I a ma’am? Isn’t that for old people? I’m still thinking about that.

Will and Sully monitored the dance floor. They said mostly the girls just stood in little groups and talked and swayed to the music. They had a live band, and let me tell you, they were good. We could hear them from the concession room. Every once in a while, I made a few wiggly moves myself. (When no one was looking.) The boys scuffled and looked at the girls, the way boys do. (Hey, we love you guys.)

They finally did a line dance, which I hear from Will and Sully was quite fun. Wish I could have seen it.

So that’s how my friends and I spent our Friday.

And I didn’t even think of Liz a single time. Maybe time does heal. Except I thought about her a lot on Saturday.
